Competent Math Tutor @UNC Asheville. Have your child excel.

I am employed as a Math Tutor at a company in Asheville. Before this, I lived in Raleigh where I worked for several distinguished companies as a Math Tutor. I have taught SAT Math prep at Cary Academy during the last two summers and at Roxboro Community School where I worked primarily as a Spanish Teacher.
I like to use examples and cater my lessons to what the student needs to work on (i.e. homework, test-prep). I also differentiate my style based on whether the student learns best through audio, visual, or kinesthetic means. I am a great listener and am able to identify where the student needs help and how to best bolster their academic ability and confidence.

I have taught gifted children, challenged children, and average children. I have seen great success with all of my students. I have unique teaching styles that I have acquired over the years. I often use colors. I am good at engaging the student in what we are learning. I also acknowledge the tactical, visual, or hearing-driven learner and catering to their needs. As a graduate from UNC Charlotte, I was blessed with the opportunity to earn a B.A. in English, as well as a professional certification in techncial writing and editing, which has afforded me both knowledge and experience in both journalism and technical media. In addition, I have acquried extensive grammatical skills due to writing research papers, as well as conducting articles which were seen by more than 30,000 subscribers nationwide at my previous publication
It is my belief that every student yearns to acquire an education. Accordingly, it is the responsibility of the instructor to find that spark and create a learning regimen geared towards that students specific method of learning. I tend to lead by example in an effort to relate to the student. I find that this method of operation creates a sense of willingness from the student, as well as establishes a sense of trust.

More About This Tutor...

I absolutely love children of all ages. I am a strong advocate for using literature to spark students' interests in topics. I believe that in order for children to learn, they need to make their own discoveries. I like to use a lot of hands-on activities for children to learn. I encourage children to work together to find answers. Overall, I love working with children and truly believe I can make a difference in their lives.
I am a graduate of Appalachian State University and am currently a graduate student in Reading at Clemson University. I have a BS in elementary education and absolutely love working with children. I have a minor in English, so I am confident in both my reading skills and writing skills. I have worked with third graders, first graders and kindergarteners in my undergraduate experience and believe I could work with any level.

I love to work with children of all ages and genders. I have worked with children who have learning disabilities, physical disabilities as well as children of all ages, races, and genders. I attempt to make learning as fun and relevant to the child as possible as every child has varying levels of understanding and concentrations. I am extremely patient and can handle anything. I like to relate learning to childrens' lives (make it about basketball if the boy likes basketball, or about chocolate if the girl likes chocolate).
I was a peer tutor in high school for English and Spanish. I also tutored children in Hebrew at a local temple. In addition, I volunteered as a tutor for underprivileged children in Chicago in all areas: Spelling, Reading, Writing, Math, Language, etc. for grades K-8.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with people. Getting to know the people you work with is truely the first step to help any educational situation become successful. As I described above, I have many experiences to share from my 13 years of teaching. I am a very open and flexible educator that uses various resources in order to help my students become and feel successful with challenges. However, everyday I continue to learn something new from my students just as they have learned from me. I always enjoy any opportunity to help young generations prepare for the role of future leaders that will shape and take care of our world someday.

The visual-auditory-kinesthetic or VAK method of instruction is a hands-on, child-involved method that reaches students with all types of learning needs. It is my primary teaching strategy utilized. I find it important to match reading material,(utilizing both student ability and interest levels,)to promote maximum reading success. I offer flexibility and much enthusiasm for each subject that I teach. I am a life long learner, as conveyed in countless ways to my students. I'm caring, kind, patient and understand my students' needs and abilities. I find it imperative to not only applaud my students' strengths but also to encourage the "weaker" skills that they possess. I have good rapport with students and their families as well.
The last six years I have taught using a most effective multi-sensory method of instruction for children with language-based differences, both as a fu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have over twenty years of teaching English and French. I have taught middle school language arts to students in grades six through eight, high school students in grades nine through eleven and college English to freshmen and sophomores. I specialize in literature and composition. In French, I have taught mostly high school levels of French I through French IV although I also taught grades 2-5 for one year. In addition to teaching English and French, I have 24 college credits in Spanish and have taught Spanish to levels I and II for a couple of years.
My teaching style is traditional but creative; I believe in learning the basics first. Once the basics are mastered, then the student can move on to the more creative lessons. I also like variety in my lessons because I like to keep my students interested in what I am teaching. For instance, I like to offset grammar with skits w ... read more

As an engineering major, I learned what it takes to work hard and excel in academics. I graduated at the top of my class with a 3.9 GPA. The engineering degree provided me with a deep understanding of both math and science and has enabled me to tutor and teach in those subjects at most levels. Over the past year I have been tutoring and substitute teaching in a variety of subjects with a focus on math and science.
I love working with youth, both in the classroom and outside it. I am inspired by helping create knowledgeable and inquisitive children by providing them with the skills necessary for academic success. I believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences and that is precisely what I strive to do. I believe in listening and taking the time to figure out what works well and what doesn’t work for each student. I believe that people have many different learning styles and it is important to get to know the student in order to teach them well. I am very patient and comfortable with a diverse group of people. I also think that in order for people to learn, material must be presented so that the student can internalize the ideas and express the new ideas by reflecting on their life and their experiences. In order for many children to want to learn, ideas and educational materials must fit their identity so that they are not as threatened by them. Education should be fun; growing is a wonderful experience and children as well as adults can be re-awakened by it and motivated to be the best they can be.
