My comments on tutoring Poetry : My favorite end-of-the-year project. Students creatively put together bound booklets with different types of poetry they learned. I make poetry a lot of fun!

I have worked with children in a variety of settings and ages over the past 25 years: church camp counselor, gymnastics coach, dance instructor, theater, forensics judge, tutor, and classroom teacher. These experiences have both shaped my style of teaching and equipped me with a broad range of skills needed to connect with, instruct, and inspire children. I’ve worked for an elementary MPS school, an elementary Charter School, a suburban Middle School, and a Catholic school system. When two of the last schools I worked for closed because of financial difficulties, I went back to school to get my Masters Degree in Reading Curriculum and Instruction. I am currently in my final semester at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in the Secondary English Education program. I am a full-time student teacher at Milwaukee High School of the Arts in the Milwaukee Public School system; I teach English 9 and British Authors (10th grade English). I was a part-time student teacher last fall at Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts, and taught 7th grade English. I was a tutor and mentor for UWM's GEAR UP program and worked with high schoolers in all subjects, especially math and English. I play piano, read, write, and blog daily, and love to teach and learn. A Little Bit About Me...

I was an exceptionally driven high school student, taking the most difficult schedule my small private school would offer. My course work included AP calculus and AP US government, on both exams I received good marks. In college I studied a wide variety of classes in pursuit of a degree in the liberal arts. My main foci were history, foreign languages and English literature and grammar while maintaining a love for the sciences and mathematics. I have spent the last two years teaching English as a second language in China. My time there was spent teaching the oral skills and tutoring in reading and writing.

A Little Bit About Me...

I go through all the concepts with the individual pertaining to what portion of statistics they are studying at that time. I will then walk them through a couple of examples demonstrating how to properly obtain the correct answer. I will follow that up by asking them to do a problem without any direct instruction from me. I will watch them work on the problem to assure they are working on it properly. If any mistakes are made I will politely point them out as the individual is working. Finally, I will ask them to work on problems completely on their own and I will check their answers when they are done. I feel the only way to learn statistics, or any math for that matter, is through repetition and working on a lot of problems.

I believe everyone has the chance to succeed if they are given the right opportunity. I believe everyone learns differently and therefore catering to one's individual needs is important. I myself am a visual and hands-on learner and because of this would most likely try to incorporate this in my teaching style.
