A Little Bit About Me...

Have tutored in multiple subjects (math, French, physics, MCAT, etc) since college. Served as adjunct faculty to Indiana School of Medicine and St Vincent Fam Med residency from 1993-2005. Have taught multiple paramedical subjects at National College in Indianapolis from 11/10- current. Got two english major daughters through HS math (through trig) and physics. (Hardest of all)
Socratic- I encourage questions, challenges, am willing and happy to look things up with students, know I do not know everything and enjoy revising my own knowledge as I go. Current knowledge changes continuously, and a day in which I learn something myself is a good one.

After serving 4 years in the US Air Force I got out and completed my undergraduate degree in chemistry at the University of West Florida. I relate well to high school and college students. I'm from Indiana originally and decided to come back and pursue an MBA at the University of Indianapolis. I enjoy tutoring students and helping them see the beauty of math and science. I have 4 years of tutoring chemistry labs (up to Organic II and Inorganic) and one-on-one student tutoring. My style is relaxed, but focused, with a touch of humor to ease nerves. The first step is creating comfort and trust between the student and the tutor. To do this, when coaching Chemistry, I would have the student present a problem. Then, I'd say, well, let's figure this out together. And, truly, that is what we would do, step by step, by asking questions. What do we know? What do we need to figure out? Essentially showing them the thought process out loud, and involving them in obtaining the solution. This approach helps develop confidence. Repeating creates familiarity. I have peer tutoring experience with friends and class mates in college. I have have a BS in Biology and Pre-Dental Prep. I finished with a major GPA of 3.7 and overall GPA of 3.3. I am a huge fan of the sciences, and enjoy keeping up to date on that knowledge. I currently work in a sales role that requires me to call on "C" level executives in Indianapolis.
While in college I took every opportunity to help friends and classmates. I enjoy understanding a subject and then helping another understand it as well. A Little Bit About Me...

While I have no "official" teaching experience, I was frequently required to teach other members of the various teams I was on as well as people from other groups. This involved everything from tutorial presentations to a large and diverse group down to individual tutoring at the table in my office. Most people told me I was pretty good at it.
I first try to determine what level of knowledge my "students" had. Then, building on that, I would add layers until the group I was with understood the material. I would check with them frequently to make sure they understood what we just covered and I allowed questions at any time. If necessary, I would back up and try a different approach. My goal was to make sure they understood the material, whatever it took.
