My comments on tutoring SAT - Verbal : I have excellent strategies for interpreting and analyzing reading passages, building vocabulary, and teaching sentence structure (for sentence completion). I also did quite well on the Verbal portion of the SAT, so my methods are tried and tested!

I have a degree in English and Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and have two years experience writing for the Daily Tar Heel. I have also completed internships with the local NPR station, WUNC, and with the organization AGRADU (Advocates for Grassroots Development in Uganda). I am highly organized, responsible, and driven, and am very personable. I work well with children and young adults; I am the oldest of five children and during high school and college, I worked as a dance teacher and nanny. Professional Exam Prep and Subject Tutoring

During my time as Head Tutor at UNCA, regardless of department, I tutored over 200 students in mathematics and physics. Of those students, at least 80% saw an increase of at least one letter grade and at least 20% saw an increase by two letter grades. Many students I tutored in one subject came back to be for tutoring in the other. For many of my students I served as an invaluable mentor who guided them from their earliest days as a college freshman to the day the walked across the stage and earned their degree. I enjoy teaching any age student, but more than that I get satisfaction when that student attains their goal. I have tutored throughout school and into college. During college, I mentored and tutored two young girls from an under-privileged school for a local program. After college, I did some private consulting, helping people write admissions essays and prepare for the ACT and other standardized tests. I've also worked as a Google Answers Researcher and as a grants adviser to nonprofit foundations.
I like to get to know the child and form a friendship with him or her. Once we develop a rapport it is easier for them to open up to me. As the oldest of three children, I have informally tutored for many years. While pursuing my undergraduate degree, I worked with a community college student and aided him in passing his Algebra course. My interests in education are diverse. II believe that writing is a craft that anyone can learn--anad that the craft can be found in revisison: in re-shaping draft after draft. I also believe that most people are smart. i've had high school students who read at a 3rd grade level--but they were smart when addressing subjects of interest to them. I teach by starting with the familiar--what students understand--and then buiding on it. I believe that any child can learn and that we all have various learning styles. We just have to find the style that is best for optimum learning. Some of us are visual learners and some are auditory learners, and many of us learn with a combination of styles.
