Testing Skills is one of my top subjects! I don't approve of "teaching to the test" but there is a definite method to being a successful test taker. Wheter it's weekly spelling, multiplication tables, states and their capitals, or the dreaded end-of-grade or end-of-course, I can coach you on strategies that are proven to help you perform better.

As mentioned in my earlier description, I have eighteen years experience as an educator. I have taught students of all ages from early childhood through college and non-traditional adult education. I believe in making learning fun and engaging by relating concepts to points of interest for the individual student.
Tutoring differs from teaching in that "style" is replaced by method. Some of the methods I have used in the past are rhythm and music, neumonic devices, and of course, drill and practice. I have been told that I am gifted with presenting material in novel ways.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught special education since August of 1989. I began at Dunn Middle School with a mildly mentally handicapped self-contained class. After three years I taught for one year at Clayton Primary in a multi-handicapped class. I then transferred to Four Oaks Middle School in 1993 where I continue to teach. The first year there I taught a self-contained mentally handicapped class, and since then I have taught through the inclusion model. Through co-teaching I work with the regular education teachers in grades six, seven and eight in the areas of math and language arts. This has been a very rewarding experience as I have watched the self-esteems of all students, regular and special education students thrive and experience success. Most of my students have learning disabilities and/or attention difficulties. I currently work with two students who struggle with the effects of cance ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am very patient. Before every lesson I review past lessons to ensure we are not building a castle on sand. I pass on to the student the ability to convey his acquired knowledge under test conditions. I try to make a difference in each student’s life. I hope to leave the student satisfied and happy at the end of each lesson and eager for the next lesson. A successful lesson takes away the student’s fear of his or her classroom. I take great satisfaction from successful tutoring.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have never had a formal teaching position. However, in working with staff accountants in the firm I worked in, I was the one that helped explain issues and have always been told that I was very easy to approach and never intimidating. I have always felt that you do not make yourself look better by making someone else look bad. I never assume that the people I was helping understood everything. I tried to never skip over basic information. I never want to see someone struggle.
I have been working in public accounting for 17 years. I have supervised accounting and support staff for the last 10 years, and know that I have an ability to explain accounting concepts in understandable terms. I also am a mother, and feel the best way to help someone learn something is not through intimidation but by making them comfortable and relaxed. My dream has always been to teach. I prefer to maintain an open dialogue with students to identify key areas of weakness in understandings and study methods. I teach historical studies within a narrative to maintain the continuity and relevance of the information. I excel at finding ways to increase a student's retention of material. I am well-equipped to accommodate students with learning disabilities and varied backgrounds in education. I believe in setting clear goals for progress. I always aim to expand a student's general understanding of the world to help them process a broader range of information. I feel that it is just as important for a student to learn his subject as it is for that student to learn to research and teach themselves.

My job is to encourage students by providing a positive role model and love of learning. Students are asked to use higher order thinking skills; getting them to dig deeper and ask questions engages their minds and I see them become more excited about learning. First, I check for prior knowledge. Asking students what they already know about a subject helps me know where to begin. Since I am a teacher who is genuinely interested in finding out what motivates each student, I plan lessons that connect their learning to what is relevant to their own lives.
As a results-oriented teacher, I am committed to helping students succeed in all academic areas. I am personable and patient, and enjoy working with both students and parents in order to teach to the strengths and interests of each student.
