Teaching style depends on the subject, the type of material, and the student’s level and ability. The goal is to inspire a student to learn the study skills necessary to excel on their own. In a tutoring situation there is usually the immediate need (to pass a test) and the long term need to be able to succeed on their own. I try to balance these two goals but the guidance of the parents is most critical. I use a combination of repetition, memorization, quizzing, recitation, and problem solving to challenge a student’s thought process so that they may grasp the material. Although I have been self employed for the last 6 years, I went back to school last year to add Science and Math for middle school to my certification. I passed the Praxis for both of those subjects spring of 2010. I was not able to get a full time teaching position this year. I went back to working for myself but would love to tutor. I have tutored for 3 years while I worked for Tryon Elementary school. I had great success with the students I worked with, in particular concerning math. I am very qualified to work in a tutoring capacity.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have received a Bachelors degree in both math and physics, as well as a Masters in applied math. All through college, and even back in high school, I excelled in both math and science. So, though my degrees are in math, I also have a well rounded knowledge of the rest of the sciences. I've also completed a Masters project that required me to explain technical concepts in a readily understandable way. A Little Bit About Me...

I love learning and the precision arts such as mathematics. This has driven me to begin in a computer career. I spent almost two decades applying my computer skills. Learning has never stopped for me. But then I love the outdoors and working with my hands. I have taught myself the carpentry trade and the concrete business. I started out by sitting down with the manuals and memorized the building codes before I built my own house. Recently I applied mathematics to a roof I was building. I have a First Class BA in English from Oxford University and a Masters in Film. After graduating I worked with an educational consultancy where I helped to create learning materials for numerous children and adults, many of whom were learning English as a second language or had dyslexia.
