I bring in diverse art forms -- painting, music, architecture and film -- as mnemonics in illustrating points of grammar. For example, in teaching adjectives, I ask the students to describe Renaissance portraits, and in this way I help my students to retain the lesson. Students are required to summarize all chapters in the text book and write how the math topics relate to their own personal life. By using this method math becomes alive to them and consequently results in them getting a much firmer grasp on how math applies to their everyday life.

My teaching style is direct, disciplined, relaxed and conversational. It will not work to just dictate to a student! The point, I think, in tutoring, is to develop good study habits and identify and discard the bad ones. Once we know what works, we can proceed from there. It is also a question of knowing that studying can be made interesting and fun. Most high schools serve up tedious, boring curricula in tedious, boring ways.
