More About This Tutor...

I hold a BA in English from Saint Olaf College and studied a variety of subjects during my time in the Liberal Arts program. I have worked with many college graduates helping them prepare for the GRE in both the English and Math sections, as well as assisting high school students in preparing for their SATs and ACTs. I have also worked with younger students helping them learn beginner level French as I studied French, English and math through college. I am able to tutor math from beginners through geometry, algebra, and pre-calculus.
I love working with students and it is such a joy to watch them learn. I understand that every student has different needs and learns things in different ways and at their own pace. I am kind, patient, and understanding. I believe students learn through discovering the right ways to do things and the reasons, not just regurgitating what an instructor t ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a psychology major, at the beginning of my education, I discovered that I had a love and talent for mathematics. Thus I pursued a dual degree in Psychology and Math. I started tutoring algebra and calculus as soon as I learned the subjects, recieving straight A's all through community college. In the Psychology Department I ended up teaching my own statistics class, later teaching statistics as a community college instructor for the Los Angeles College District. For psychology, I have conducted many quantitative and qualitative research projects, developing a strong background as a quantitative analyst. I love to teach and conduct statistical research.
My style is relaxed. Many students appear frightened of math at first. I cover each subject well, allowing students to ask many questions. I encourage students to work problems while I watch, so I can catch them at the mom ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The key to teaching any age of student is the ability of the teacher or tutor to recognize the students level of need and their adherence to a study regiment. Some students learn best in a conventional step-by-step process, while others learn better with real world applications or a "reason" for a particular concept. I am excellent at recognizing what type of curriculum a student would excel under. The only true difficulties a student can have in any subject is when they believe they are unable to learn the material. Prove to them they can succeed in even the smallest way and you can give them the confidence and interest to succeed through hard work. This is what I can do for your student.
The majority of my experience was obtained directly from my courses of study during my collegiate career. While taking all of my Physics courses math was a very important skill to have and be abl ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The students I enjoy working with most are teenagers. They are in a truly dynamic phase of growth, in that their intellects are blossoming in ways that are entirely new to them, while their emotions and bodies go through great and often difficult translformations. The power of these changes, along with their curiosity and insight, can be harnessed to create very exciting learning experiences. I have devoted myself to building learning environments that allow for maximum trust and respect between myself and my pupils; I am greatly interested in who they are and how each one of them learns.

A Little Bit About Me...

My math teaching experience has been primarily with students who didn't "get it" when they first took classes at a particular level of mathematics. My focus has been to take the material and translate it from the often-impenetrable form found in textbooks to a more accessible, practical presentation. I prefer to characterize mathematics as a language skill where, as in most language classes, exposure to a idea should be followed by enough repeated practice to develop a confidence in its implementation. This is a method used successfully in many other countries whose students consistently outperform U.S. students.
I have 10 years of experience teaching math and computer classes part-time at Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods. I have taught classes in arithmetic, pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, calculus and statistics. I can also tutor for ... read more

I worked at the Tutoring Club in Folsom, CA for 1 year. I tutored a variety of age groups, mostly high school age, in mathematics up through calculus, chemistry, biology and physics. I also worked at the learning center through Humboldt State University for about a year. Other than that, I have had multiple students for private tutoring sessions since 2005. So I have about 4 years experience in tutoring overall. I obtained 5 associates degrees from American River College in May 2007. They include AS in mathematics, math/science and general science with AA in liberal arts and general education transfer. In December of 2009 I completed all requirements for a BS in Biology with a Marine Emphasis

More About This Tutor...

While at Humboldt State, I completed the College Faculty Preparation Program. This program significantly improved my teaching pedagogy. With regards to tutoring, I feel that it is extremely important to understand and draw on the student’s learning style. As a kinesthetic learner, I frequently promote tactile learning while also introducing elements of visual, auditory, and/or reading/writing exercises, depending on what works best for the student. I’m patient and considerate but feel that it is important to set high expectations for each of my students.
Education has always been my passion. While earning my Bachelor's degree at the University of California, Santa Cruz, I was approached by a professor and asked to work as a teaching assistant with her graduate (M.A. and Ph.D. level) students. I was concurrently hired as a tutor and supplemental instructor for math, economics, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I worked for a program called CalSoap (College Knowledge). The program had us working in classrooms, at a local highschool, helping the teachers with tutoring the students. I worked in an algebra 2 and geometry class as well as did lunch and after school tutoring. I also tutored 1st graders when I was in 6th grade in reading skills.
I love being able to help children better understand their material. That is the best part of being a tutor or teacher because you get to see the light bulb finally go off when the child understands it and the joy they feel. When I tutor I do not just give the child the answer I constantly ask them what they think the next step is or how they would go about starting the problem. If it involves a formula or the kid is still confused I have them pull out their book so they can find an example and maybe follow along. Students do not use their books enough ... read more
