A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked with at-risk children in the Chicago Public Schools system to teach a wide range of skills, primarily focusing on college readiness skills, essay and resume writing, ACT preparation, and remedial and advanced reading techniques. I am also highly qualified to teach speech and journalism, and have a year of experience in each as well. I feel I can make the most impact on students when I work with them one-on-one, and so I am excited to transition from the full-time teaching to the tutoring field.
I consider myself to be fun and entertaining and very approachable in my teaching methods. I never lose patience with students and believe that making mistakes is equally as important as making progress. I believe that instilling the confidence to learn is the key to effective instruction. Students need confidence not only in their instructor’s mastery of the subject matter, but also in their own ability to gain their own such master. This is not to suggest that rigor should not be applied, but rather that a student must have an emotional engagement with the learning process and a sense of their own progress, however minimal it might seem at a particular time. I have been tutoring since my sophomore year at the University of Puget Sound. I tutor mathematics exclusively because it's my area of expertise as well as what I'm passionate about. I love the learning process. My goal is to provide an environment for the student to grow to love the process of learning.
