A Little Bit About Me...

I've always enjoyed helping someone else. There is a certain satisfaction after seeing the look on their face of appreciation. I believe that one on one assistance is very helpful for students who are struggling because sometimes they are afriad to raise questions in the classroom, in fear of only them having trouble.
As a recent graduate from Salem State College, I have earned my BA degree in English, with a minor in History. Writing and reading is something I am very passionate about. I have learned different forms of writing, such as analytical, persuassive, reading responses, creative, and so on. With that experience, I have learned grammatical rules for writing that was very important to my success. I have never tutored, but I feel that with my knowledge or writing and reading can be useful to someone who is having difficulties in that area. I work very well one on one ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been tutoring for 17 years for all ages and levels. I have tutored both in and out of an academic setting, both in schools and at the students home. I am highly qualified to tutor all ages and levels of math, science, english, english language, spanish, writing and SAT prep.
My teaching style is student centered based upon their individual learning styles. I am a holistic grader who is able to reach and teach even the most difficult student, such as those who have acquired "learned helplessness". I have the wonderful ability of getting to know my students so that my lessons are based upon their interests.

I believe that education is the most efficient way to combat any issue. I, therefore, feel that it is essential for youth to find success throughout their academic journey. I approach work with youth from a strengths perspective. As a result, I am able to quickly assess a young person's assets and skills that will help him or her access education in the easiest way possible. I think it is important to cater to each individual's learning style, whether that be visual, audio, or hands-on learning. It is my goal to help youth of all ages realize, and gain the tools to reach, their full potential.
Improving the lives of children has always been a passion of mine. While my academic background has had a focus, primarily, in the social work realm, my overall philosophy for working with youth emphasizes patience and education. I have sought opportunities working with both young chil ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Most of my career has involved some level of teachng or training. I trained new volunteers during the Peace Corps, I taught rural Tunisian families how to use available resources to improve their lives, training natural education instructors and volunteers at the Wells Reserve, traqining and coordinating volunteers within my roles as Executive Director, completing all course requirements for my Maine Teacher Certification, obtaining Ed. Tech III, Highly Qualified status in Maine, and substitute teaching, and now in my role as Title I, Ed. Tech II at Valley View Community School in Farmington, NH where I work extensively with children with special needs.
I believe that questions are more powerful teaching tools than simply delivering answers. I do not wish to teach my students WHAT to think; my goal is to help students learn HOW to think, and to develop a pssion for learning which ... read more

I have been teaching at the Community College. I have students that range in age from 17 years old to 55 years old. I am enjoying teaching very much and would like to add to the teaching I do. I also taught for one year at the Tri City Christian Academy in Somersworth, NH. In that class I had students ranging in age from 11 years old to 18 years old. I have a BA in French from the University of Southern Maine. I am currently finishing my Master of Arts in Teaching French through the University of Maine. I love the language and feel that I pass on this love to my students.
I enjoy teaching and use a variety of different methods. I incorporate different activities into each lesson to reinforce what we have learned. Know the student first, then teach the subject! I believe most students learn most effectively when teaching is aimed at their personal learning styles, interests and abilities wherever possible. I always try to customize learning in this way. Understanding my students is the key to good teaching. That is my teaching style. I like to augment more traditional styles of teaching with visual arts and music. I believe in letting a student have control of his /her learning activities and I always teach to NH state standards of learning and assessment, unless working in a more independent setting.
I am an experienced educator who has a wide variety of experience in diverse school settings; public, private, alternative, and adult education. I like to take the dry facts and rules of a subject and engage the students -- primarily through Harkness Mehtod discourse -- on the relevance of the subject and text to contemporary life, whether to absorb material or simply for the learning experience of deconstruction. Having the students write accomplished papers -- essay, research or argumentative -- is always a rewarding experience for myself and my students.
I began teaching high school Drama while still in college in 1982, and went on to win four state championships. I began tutoring SAT students and teaching prep classes for the Princeton Review in 1989. I have taught GED prep for Rockingham County Services. In 1992, I began tutoring special needs students and teaching summer school social studies at Portsmouth High School (1992-1997). That year, I returned to college and earned a degree in English. Although my undergraduate degree is in history and my teacher certification is in social studies, I am fluent in French and am very good at mathematical subjects including geometry, trigonometry, and algebra.
I am very comfortable working with students of all ages. I am extremely patient and easy-going with a good sense of humor. I believe in enabling students to become proficient life-long learners. I try to encourage my students to look beyond the textbook in order to achieve greater enrichment in their lives. Learning should not stop at the school doors. As a valued member of the ANA faculty and team I continually worked to lift the standards and proficiency of all the students that I taught both directly and indirectly to prepare them for the rigors of high school and college. As the English Department Chair I mentored and provided leadership to the staff I supervised as well as my fellow colleagues. I earned a BS in Education as well as a Certification in TESL. During my many years of teaching I have mentored and tutored students in English, History, ESL and Study Skills (which focused on time management, organization, note taking and test taking skills as well as building self-esteem.) I have an extensive background in volunteering and in promoting anti-bullying programs.

The temptation as instructor is to simply restructure the way in which a student learns in order to fit your view, and those I have helped encourage such behavior. Guidance, suggestions, and allusions as to how a student can improve and understand is a better alternative. Simply doing the work for the student has little value in regards to education. A fine balance must be struck between open ended comments of little use and high jacking creativity through re-working large portions of work. My policy is to make the student aware of their shortcomings, explain my reasoning, and use enigmatic reserve in telling them how to correct errors. Unless the mistake is simple, I hold back on literally telling them what to do. .
As an undergraduate, my focus for studies in English were both Critical Literary Analysis and Creative Writing. Analytical writing was stressed heavily, giving me ... read more
