I am a 2011 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelors of Science in Political Science. During my education, I was exposed to many subjects, ranging from Electrical Engineering to European Literature. The most important things I learned during my time there were time management and study skills, because without a strong foundation in those subjects, one can not excel in others.

A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer to relate things to the real world. For instance, when teaching anything dealing with Greek Mythology, I like to pick out something from the myth that is relevant to today (like from "The Iliad," the character Ajax is known as being stronger than Greece, and the soap brand Ajax has the slogan of being "stronger than grease").
I have loved English since I was in middle school. I went to college with the desire to graduate with a degree in English Education, but realized (after almost three years in this program) that the education program at my school was completely disorganized. I decided to drop education and pursue a degree in solely English with a special interest in literature. I have also starred in two plays that my church put on- one that required only actions and another that had a multitude of lines and musical sections. As for Sign Language, I have an aunt w ... read more

As a graduate of university level education from the English field, I have written a great deal and have been extensively exposed to the writing process. A great deal of my education was focused on Education/Teaching in the event I decided to apply my degree in such a manner. I have some experience with students in the formal classroom environment as well as the one-on-one setting.
I vary it the best I can to accommodate the student, though I believe that the most important factor is that the student be guided through the process and never just given the answer or denied explanation.

I tailor my teaching style to the needs of the particular student. Typically I will give traditional lessons, but will break up the curriculum into practical applications and I love to play games to enhance learning.
I have extensive experience tutoring in reading, wring and listening in the fundamentals of the English Language. While in college I also assisted fellow students professionally, but the concentration of my experience comes from student-teaching in the United States and teaching independently overseas.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a high school and university student, I regularly tutored other students in Spanish and other subjects, both professionally and on a volunteer basis. While I was earning my bachelor's and my master's in Spanish, I gained the skills required to help other students reach their foreign language goals. I was paid by George Mason University to tutor college athletes in Spanish. I have tutored elementary age students in every subject from math to literature and English to Social Studies. Through my experience with my universities' literary magazines, I have also achieved an extensive knowledge of grammar and writing and would be qualified to help students with their writing.
I know that learning a foreign language is a challenge for many people and takes a lot of commitment for everyone. I know what it takes to get from the point where you are struggling with a subject to the poi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is tailored to the individual. The first thing I do when I'm trying to teach someone something is determine their learning style. If they don't know it I help them figure it out. I do find that most people learn best by diving in and doing it themselves first, while I serve as a "safety net". Whenever I was teaching new helmsmen or junior officers how to steer survey lines, I would direct them how to do it the first few times, and then when they felt ready to try it themselves, I stood back and let them, not stepping in until the absolute last second. Letting them make and try to correct their own mistakes seemed to be the best teaching tool I had.
As a NOAA Corps Officer, I helped teach new personnel many facets of our day-to-day operations, from instructing new officers on getting their Officer of the Deck qualifications to preparing new survey techs for their h ... read more

Instead of "teacher" or "tutor", my students have come to know me as their "thinking coach." I pride myself in being able to adapt my "coaching" style for each individual. I am a firm believer in not simply providing and answer, but helping students find the answers for themselves. I stress the importance of proper written and verbal communication and while improvement takes time and effort, both the students and I live for the moments when the light simply "comes on." Through humor, patience, and encouragement, we learn from each other and make one another stronger students, teachers, and communicators.
As a graduate of a top-level liberal arts college, I found that great teachers are the best influence for great teaching. I have been teaching for 6 years with experience at the middle school, high school, and college level. I have tutored students in writing, math, science, music, ... read more

In high school I worked in the local elementary schools helping students with their homework in addition to supplementing what they learned in class with additional activities. I have also worked at Sylvan Learning Center as a Materials Manager, but I also worked with students should an instructor need to work with a student one on one. I have a BA degree in Journalism with a minor in English, and have a large amount of experience in media software such as the Adobe Suite, Final Cut Pro editing software, and professional grade video production outside of English/Grammar/Composition. I have been signed on as a creative writing instructor for a summer arts program in Norfolk.
Every student learns differently, so what may work for one will not work for another. I am a very hands-on and nurturing instructor who loves learning from the student even as I teach them. I don't like to confi ... read more
