My comments on tutoring Writing Skills : I am in a reading and writing program at Sonoma State called the Hutchins program. I have always been good at writing, and I absolutely love to write. I have a natural instinct to write and to help younger students find their voice through writing.

I would say my teaching style is really focused on the student and what they need. In school I was an average student never getting lower than a C or higher than in an A. So I really want to focus on listening to the student, especially because they probably are not heard at school. I want to make each subject interesting to the student, whether that means going out and playing basketball or chess or candy or anything the student absolutely loves. I want to attach each subject to a good memory, I don't want to pressure them or push them to just memorize facts that I know they will probably forget after they are tested. From my own personal experience I want any student I tutor to turn around and actually enjoy learning about a subject they are having trouble with.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have never been someone who "just gets it" when it comes to math or science, and so I understand more than many people who pursued degrees in these subjects just how puzzling they can be. Math seems like it is filled with "tricks" that seem impossible to know unless you were born with some innate gift. When I teach, I seek to show, step-by-step. how to think about a problem as more than a set of symbols on paper. Even before I went to college and earned my B.A., I had already taught two years of ESL in Kachin State, Burma. I came back to the US and earned my degree in East Asian Studies at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. A few months after I graduated I went to the People's Republic of China and taught English as a Second Language from 2003 through 2006.
