A Little Bit About Me...

I tend to teach things in a visual way. Drawing pictures, diagrams and using visual aides are the best ways I have witnessed to teach kids. I also think a structured reward system is HUGE in motivating kids to succeed. You need to find out what motivates your kid (money, toys, etc) and set up a system where he/she can earn these rewards through academic success.
I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. Under the six years of my tutoring, both of these "disabled" kids were completely mainstreamed and even taking some AP and challenge classes. With a BA in English and Minor in Mass Communications, I pursued careers utilizing my writing, editing, and communication talents. Five years in the professional world helped me realize my passion lies in teaching English composition. Thus, I decided to attend graduate school for an MA in English in order to fulfill my passion. During this time, I gained intensive training centered around composition theories and methods, linguistics, written assessments, and rhetoric. After I earned my BFA, I started working towards my Master of Art in Art History. I have an understanding of most studio art forms and extensive knowledge of Art History. When I started working on my thesis, I joined the Minnesota Reading Corps, and have been teaching early literacy ever since.
