When tutoring I usually ask prompting questions to assist the person in working through a problem. By building off of the skills the student already has it helps them better understand the process. If a student is learning new material or does not understand the way something was explained I will try to come up with an alternative method. I will go through an example with them step by step ensuring that they understand what happens along the way. I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. Under the six years of my tutoring, both of these "disabled" kids were completely mainstreamed and even taking some AP and challenge classes. I believe that any kid can learn if they are taught in a way that is fun and structured. I tutored these kids in Math, Science, Social Studies and English. I also spent a semester as a Teaching Assistant in an upper level Philosophy course during my undergrad. Most of my TA tutoring was helping college students write papers.

I have substitute taught for two years in the Superior, WI school district. Most of that has been at the HS and MS levels. I have also substituted at Marshall School as well as ISD 709 in Duluth as a special ed paraprofessional. My experience there is principally at Morgan Park MS in the autism classroom. I have successfully tutored two students in Algebra, one is now a certified teacher in the state of Minnesota.
I am patient and easygoing. I have two special needs children and my experience with them helps me to be understanding. I try to empbhasize learning the formulas that we use to solvbe the problems. If the students can understand how to solve a problem, then its just a matter of plugging the numbers in and their chance for success greatly improves.
