When I teach I try to make the student feel more at ease with the subject. Yes this material is difficult but with persistence it not only do you succeed in academia but you end up discovering something amazing. While I am patient and encouraging, I do have little tolerance for excuses. If how I teach is not working, I will find another way looking beyond the standard text if need be. My ultimate aim would be to teach the student how to successfully learn on his own. I would first determine the set of circumstances unique to each student. For example, are they far behind their class or just having problems grasping some concepts? I would modify my teaching style depending on the situation, but in general I identify facts that need to be memorized and concepts that need to be understood. We would work through material, in a textbook, for example. Finally the student must apply logic and related skills (algebra, for example) needed for problem solving. Problem solving ties facts and concepts together and brings a deeper comprehension of and familiarity with the subject.
