I worked for Kankakee Community College for one year as a Math and Spanish tutor in 2006 and 2007. During this year, I honed the mathematics I learned through high school as well as the four years of Spanish I had taken to that point. After a year, my classes conflicted with my tutoring schedule but I still wanted to help fellow students so I started independently tutoring. After a year of doing so, I went on hiatus to focus on my final two semesters which centered around extensive lab work as well as research writing.
I believe in taking a casual approach in tutoring. From previous experience, I have found that many times students understand the material but tend to get flustered in a classroom environment. Based on my past teaching experiences, I have learned that in order to motivate students to learn, it’s imperative to make connections between the curriculum and their prior experiences and interests. I believe that it is unrealistic to expect students to learn at the same rate and have identical learning styles, so teachers must differentiate their instruction to account for all types of learning abilities, levels, interests, and talents. For instance, teachers should be able and willing to plan lessons and/or assessments that allow students to utilize their own individual and unique intelligences, such as perhaps music or art.
