A Little Bit About Me...

I attended Thomas More College on an academic scholarship and graduated with honors in the spring of 2011 with a BA in Environmental Science. Presently, I am pursuing a Master of Biology degree at the University of Cincinnati, where I hold a University Graduate Scholarship as well as a Yates Scholarship. I worked as a private tutor from 2006 through 2011, and in 2008 and 2009 I also tutored through Thomas More College. Currently, I am an instructor for undergraduate biology labs at the University of Cincinnati.
I have worked with elementary, high school, and college-aged students, providing instruction in subjects ranging from English to biology. Literature is one of my top subjects! Masters Degree in English and American Literature from the University of California, San Diego. MA thesis concentrated on themes found in Victorian novels. While an undergrad, I studied at Oxford University in England where I focused on Medieval and Renaissance texts. Years later, I was able to do post graduate coursework in 17C literature and the Romantics at Harvard University Extentsion. Extremely well read in a broad range of literature but primarily focused on Western Literatures. Extensive hands-on classroom instuction with first year college students, would be suitable for junior and senior high school instruction as well.

I am very comfortable working with both indivduals and groups of students. I want to know what my students are thinking and feeling, so I very much prefer a seminar style of instuction. Depending on the subject - be it composition or literature - I break up the time we have into workshops, allowing us to focus on issues or topics of interest or greatest need to the students. If the coursework is grammar or composition, I also encourage a lot of hands-on writing and boardwork when possible. I feel students learn best when they try to express themselves and are then open to honest critical review. I believe that students should get opportunities to review and revise their work as well, presenting only their best efforts at the end.

Pick out what's good and encourage that. It is too easy to focus on the negative. As a writer who understands rejection very well, it has humbled me. Another set of eyes always helps during the editing process. Sometimes a writer just needs to be set on the correct path, and they can do much of the rest from there. Being a parent has also taught me patience, which is something any teacher needs. Also, reading helps you become a better writer. I think when I was younger I didn't want to hear that as much, but it's true.

My comments on tutoring Literature : I'm very familiar and experienced with British Literature, not so much American Lit. I do know some American Literature authors.

I started tutoring in 2009 through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana. I tutor my "Little" for an hour once a week. I help with whatever subject they need. My specialty is Language Arts, but if you need help with basic math, I can do that too. I have observed many elementary, middle school, and high school classes. I know what works best, especially since I'm going to become a high school language arts teacher in a few years.
I'm patient. I'll try and make my lessons easy to understand. I know how frustrating language arts can be, but I also know how rewarding it can be as well. I can relate very easily to high school students, because I just graduated from high school 5 years ago.
