I love teaching and working with children of all ages. I believe in encouraging children to discover what they are to learn instead of rote learning for most things, and I also believe in establishing automaticity for some tasks, such as math facts and geometry theorems. I believe that all children are capable of learning with the right approach. It is important to persist in teaching a concept from different angles until the child "gets it." A good educator can make a world of difference to a child. I am a strong proponent of reinforcing a child's strengths through positive encouragement and exhibiting an enthusiasm for the subject at hand to foster interest on the part of the student.

I have always enjoyed tutoring students and seeing them "get" the subjects we are touching on. The look on their face during this moment is priceless. I fully understand that everyone learns things in different ways. While one student may be able to memorize and understand facts one way, say by repetition, another student may learn the information by understanding the background and context that it comes from. I am very patient and flexible with students and realize that if they do not understand the material that it is not their fault, but rather I need to try a different approach with them. A good education is not only valuable in life, but I feel that students gain self confidence when they see their grades improve and they actually understand their class work. I believe each audience deserves the correct teaching style(s). If the student has not reached a high level of education then I hold no opinion of this. I utilize a multi-cultural perspective and my appreciation and understanding of other cultures allows me to assist in the creation of an experiential-based lesson for the student. I believe there are many different teaching styles that may be utilized in different student populations. A Little Bit About Me...

First, and foremost, I believe that effective learning is both fun and relevant. I have always been able to make a game of it and to make it both interesting and challenging to others. My goal is never to teach them a rote solution, but to challenge them to think about the concepts and have then tell me the answers. This builds their confidence and solidifies their learning experience. I find that if they understand how a concept was derived in the first place, they seldom forget that story and therefore have learned something that will stay with them for a live time. I prefer to use the Socratic Method and draw the information from my students. Again, I think it is best if they THINK rather than learn. Over time I see all my students (and all our five daughters) have responded well to this approach.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have found that there is nothing so rewarding as that moment when a subject 'clicks' for a student. By staying positive and adaptive I believe it is possible to guide students to finding solutions on their own. I work at finding new ways to approach common stumbling blocks and try to show students how applicable math is to everyday life. If it had not been for a few extraordinary teachers, I may not have felt it possible to accomplish what I have. Teachers should be positive and inpirational and I always strive to attain that goal.
