LESSONS SHOULD ACCOMMODATE STUDENT LEARNING STYLES

My belief is that all students have different learning styles. Therefore lessons need to be individualized to meet student needs. In order to be successful students need to be engaged by creative teachers. My teaching experience has taught me to accommodate these needs when developing lesson plans.
I have 15 years of teaching experience with special needs students in a rural school district. During this time i provided private tutoring sessions for Elementary, Middle, High School and College students. My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : Not prolific on the Histories, but very acquainted with Shakespeare's style of writing. I collect books on Shakespeare and have visited his house and gravesite.

I am currently pursuing a degree in secondary education with a specialization in American History. I have a passion for the subject and for helping students succeed. I just completed my practicum last fall and was active in a 10th grade World History class for about 10 hours a week. During the summer of 2011 I was employed at girl scout camp in Lake George where I planned and taught History lessons for our weekly programs. I also have worked for the Walt Disney Company, in the Magic Kingdom. While I was there, I was able to do American History trivia and tours for the Liberty Square area.

My teaching style is a hands-on-approach. I don't want students to just learn and memorize history; but to enjoy it and see how it relates to their own lives. I use visual, verbal, and tactical aids with each of my lessons. I also strive to include everyone culturally and literally (i.e. if they have IEP's or literacy issues).

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style will vary depending on the class as a whole or the type of student I am working with individually. In order to be an effective teacher I have seen that I need to be flexible with how I present material to a student. If a student is visual I am able to create diagrams and use props to show a concept rather than only speak the material. Some students need hands on and things like manipulatives in math help create a concrete way to remember a concept, and this is also something I do. In my mind success as a teacher is largely based on the success of the student and I am able to figure out what a specific child needs and adjust my teaching style to that student.

A teacher can be anyone, but not everyone can be a teacher. Every child has a unique learning style and it is the job of the teacher to understand this and find the best way to teach the child.
