In my experience, most students under perform in science and math due to the an inability to relate theses subjects to practical real life examples. Connecting chemistry and physics principles with analogous real life examples is the key for students to become both interested and proficient in these subjects. When a student gains an appreciation for a subject, it will certainly be reflected in by their grades.
After attending the University at Albany for four years I have accumulated a wealth of experience in Chemistry and Physics which has culminated in multiple accolades and two degrees. Inorganic Chemistry was my favorite class of my academic career. I had fantastic teachers and decided when I had the opportunity to give back to academia, I would teach inorganic chemistry. After I finished my Ph.D I became an adjunct professor at a local community college. I have been teaching chemistry for five years.
The most important aspect of my teaching style is my ability to relax my students. I believe if you are in a relaxed environment, learning becomes easy. It states that "All beauty is a making one of opposites, and a making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves" Thus, I relate the subject matter in hand to students' personal lives. For example, if we are learning Le Chartelier's Princlple, which concerns the response of a chemical reaction to stress, I have my students discuss the types of stress they experience, and their responses. I teach others by learning and adapting myself. I love finding new and creative ways to explain familiar concepts. For my degree I had to take a year of chemistry, which I immediately fell in love with, even though I had hated it in high school. I found myself tutoring the other students in my class for fun and even took two organic chemistry classes as electives just because I thought it was so interesting. I would best describe my method of teaching as a give and take experience. Through diologue, I am able to lead the student through the thought process that will derive the correct answer. Giving bits of information can provoke a new approach to the task at hand. I also feel it is important to individualize each person being tutored, as everyone learns differently. Some learn best through the use of things such as pnuemonic devices, while others may need repitition to effectivily remember the material. While obtaining my biology degree from LeMoyne college I worked with underpriviledged children in an afterschool program. This program was aimed at keeping these children off the street while their parents were at work along with helping them improve their grades. My duties included helping them with their homework and tutoring them in problem subjects as expressed by their teachers. This was a volunteer job that I found very rewarding. I received my PhD degree in 1983, and then worked for about two years at Harvard University with E.J. Corey, winner of the 1990 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Afterwards, I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 13 years, and then started a small company doing outsourced research. After selling that company, I became a Visiting Professor teaching organic chemistry at Union College (a two-year position). I enjoyed teaching and students generally enjoyed me also. Even though I was a demanding professor, my student evaluations were extremely good and many students shared how much they had learned.
