A Little Bit About Me...

My approach for each class is to focus on the text and do exercises that give students the opportunity to work with the text first-hand. I focus on troublesome areas and I spend many hours planning each class. I prefer to let students come up with their own decisions, and craft their responses into the key ideas of the lesson. I believe that flexibility is key, and this strategy makes the students feel comfortable with discussing and thinking on their own terms.
I am currently a teaching assistant for the Simpson College English Department. I selected the books for the semester, drafted the curriculum, and I instruct classes. I also hold advisory office hours. I teach poetry, fiction and nonfiction. In addition to these things, I am a poet and fiction writer with a high level of experience and craft, and can assist students in expressing themselves creatively.

I like working one-on-one with students, helping them to identify what they already know about a subject or topic and then logically building that up, step-by-step, into what they need to know. Finding a way to explain a concept in terms each individual can understand is the challenge. When students have difficulty in a class, it is often because the textbook doesn't speak to them and the teacher doesn't have time to explain it individually to each and every student. Additionally, many students simply need extra time for guided practice of a concept, time to ask questions and double check what they are doing, before they are comfortable doing it on their own in a classroom or test setting.

A Little Bit About Me...

While I earned my bachelor's degree in communication from Loyola, I also worked as an Academic coach for high school students. I spent a year tutoring students for an academic competition that tested all skill areas including, writing, math, history and science. I spent the summer of 2006 working closely with people with disabilities. I perfected my teaching skills through hands-on learning/teaching techniques.
I believe in setting goals and working to ensure they are accomplished. In my opinion, learning should never feel like a boring chore. The student should be working hard, but enjoying him or herself in the process, and this is when the most efficient and effective learning occurs.
