Elementary and special education Teacher tutor

I have taught in the Mukilteo/Everett area for 5 years. I have worked as a special education teacher for students who spend most of their time in a general education classroom. My experience and background focuses on math, reading, writing/spelling, social/emotional, and behavior skills. During my years as a teacher I have worked to help develop and implement IEP (Individual Education Plans)
My teaching style is very student driven. I take students interest in account when helping them. The ultimate goal of education is teaching students to overcome their weakness and teach them to use tools, so they can love learning. A Little Bit About Me...

I have found that tutoring sessions are most effective when they are fun! Many students find it difficult to stay focused, especially after a full school day. For this reason, I prefer to change tasks frequently and use a variety of fun games to switch up the pace of the session. Learning can be frustrating for many students when a particular subject does not come as naturally or easily as other subjects. Thus, I do my best to incorporate student's interests into reward systems and constantly give the student positive feedback about their progress to help motivate the student. As a regular classroom teacher, I felt hampered due to class size. I was never satisfied connecting with just a few students. Every student was important to me. I realized that the only way for me to really reach students was by reducing the teacher-student ratio. As a tutor, I found that teaching smaller groups of students or one-on-one was for me. Using this style, I feel strongly that students learn more, particularly at home. Students are much more comfortable at home which creates an excellent environment for learning. Learning is a joyful experience and students have a better chance of tapping into their potential.

First, I taught adult ESL, and had occasional tutoring gigs with Russian speakers learning English, and some English speakers learning Russian. Currently, I work as a special education teacher. I began tutoring in sixth grade when I voluntarily gave up my lunch recess each day to help in a first-grade classroom. I continued to tutor my peers in high school. After I graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, I was chosen by the Mayor of Bremerton to teach English in Japan for three years.
