A Little Bit About Me...

I received my English degree in the spring of 2011. I stayed at Purdue University, completing my Student Teaching in the fall of 2011. I received my certification to be a Secondary English Teacher in Jan of 2012 and have kept it up to date since. I worked in South Korea for four years (2012-2016), teaching a wide range of students English. I have a lot of experience with ADD/ADHD students as I am one. I am also experienced with Asperger's as I was diagnosed with it in college.
I like to have fun with my lessons. Getting the students to understand and enjoy their time with me makes them more likely to want to work harder.

When writing a teaching resume, think about including a Prof

I like to break down whatever skill I'm teaching in the simplest form at first. This means explaining the concept of the skill in a way that the student can understand what it is we are trying to do. I also try to use a pictorial representation of the skill if that is needed. After that I'll show them how I work a problem with that particular skill so they can see firsthand what the thought process is and the steps that are needed to use that particular skill whether it is adding fractions or solving equations, etc. Then I'll give the student a problem to do on their own while I guide them through the steps. If they get off on a particular step I'll correct them immediately and get them on the right path. Once I feel they understand what is going on and how to work a problem, I'll give them a problem to do without me watching them and see if they can get the answer right by themselves. I change my teaching style depending on the client. With ESL students, I will often point out every mistake to them so that they can get used to seeing what the correct way looks like. With other students, I point out a few mistakes, and then expect them to find the others on their own. With math, I will give out a sample problem, work out how it is done, then expect the student to do a new math problem on his or her own. All in all, I will adjust my teaching style depending on the needs of the client.

It is my belief that every person learns differently. Students learn best by different methods and learn at different methods. I find that the best way to tech a student, especially in a one on one environment is to find how the individual best learns and use that, rather than trying to teach by any already formulated method.
As an engineering graduate from Georgia Tech, I have a high level of skill in mathematics, from algebra to calculus and differential equations, and in sciences, especially physics. Also, I began my college career at the University of Alabama, where I was in the honors program. There I had to write numerous papers in the subjects of literature and history, while at Georgia Tech I became proficient in writing technical reports. I use a constructivist approach to teaching with engaging lessons using real-world situations as a foundation. Learning can be applied to the interest of the individual student to exhibit mastery of the standards required at each level. All students learn differently, so my first goal as an educator is to identify a student’s learning style(s) then plan lessons accordingly. I set high, yet reasonable, expectations for my students and they seldom fail to accomplish any task required of them.
As a professional educator, I have five years experience in working with both adolescents and adults in the public high school environment. I am currently an adjunct English instructor at Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood, South Carolina. I love teaching children. For the younger children, I tend to be more hands on with projects and objects to help them learn. I also believe visual aids are very good. For middle school children learning math and English, I feel like giving them lots of practice problems and going over it together really seems to help. For students in high school it usually depends on the kid. By this age most of them have discovered if they are visual, kinetic, or auditory learners. Based on the type of learner they are , I like to adjust my teaching style.
I tutored for Mission: Mentor while I attended Georgia State Universtity for 3 years. I was awarded Mentor of the Year in 2006 at Georgia State University. When I continued my education at Augusta State University, I volunteered as a mentor at the ASU Literacy Center helping children of all ages.
