A Little Bit About Me...

I’m a graduate of Oregon State University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business and Marketing Education. I spent most of my working career in business, management and sales. 2009, I returned to my first love, the classroom. I’m currently a substitute teacher in the Washoe County School District, ACE Charter, and some private schools. I hope to soon have a full time teaching position, when a position becomes available. My vast experience of teaching children and young adults hasn’t been in a traditional classroom. The teaching venues I refer to were in the workplace, with young adults (teenagers) as retail employees and an outdoor setting as a Boy Scout Leader. I have experience tutoring anything from phonics to college level writing. I taught preschool for a year and a half at the Lion and Lamb Christian Preschool in Reno, NV. I have also tutored at the UNR Writing Center (when it still existed) during the Fall semester of '08. Since October 2008 I have tutored at the Reno Huntington Learning Center where I teach phonics all the way up to SAT and ACT Verbal test prep. While at UNR I took an upper division English Class entitled "How to Tutor an English Writer." I also have a minor of Spanish from UNR. I am by no means fluent in the language but can read and understand it fairly well. I am comfortable tutoring anything below advanced high school Spanish.

I emphasize meaning in my instructional style. Rather than, say, inculcate a formula for comma us, I try to convey how comma use provides meaningful structure to an idea, i.e. the sentence. In the larger sphere of things, I believe in showing a student how a piece of literature--which may well include his or her own writing--is meaningful to himself. When this is accomplished, I have found that the "meaning" of the work provides the necessary impetus to motivate the student.
