A Little Bit About Me...

I begin a lesson by asking a student what he or she knows about the topic. If they have any familiarity with the topic I ask about it and confirm or correct their preconceptions. If the subject lends itself to a real-world example or demonstration, I would offer this for thought. Finally I teach the core concept, connecting it to other concepts already understood by the student. There is usually more than one way to teach a concept. I take into account the learning style of the student. Written or diagrammatic methods might be more effective than verbal explanations. Pnemonics can be useful, but only if the underlying concepts are first taught.

I have experience tutoring anything from phonics to college level writing. I taught preschool for a year and a half at the Lion and Lamb Christian Preschool in Reno, NV. I have also tutored at the UNR Writing Center (when it still existed) during the Fall semester of '08. Since October 2008 I have tutored at the Reno Huntington Learning Center where I teach phonics all the way up to SAT and ACT Verbal test prep. While at UNR I took an upper division English Class entitled "How to Tutor an English Writer." I also have a minor of Spanish from UNR.
