I emphasize understanding the principle as opposed to just “getting the answer”. Sometimes a student will get frustrated with me because of that, but I’m committed to teaching how to fish and not just handing out fish. For example, with a mathematical problem, I may throw out additional problems revolving around the same principle at hand to make sure the student really understands as opposed to just getting past one question. I try to put the difficult concepts of mathematics and chemistry into words and experiences that the student can understand. In the words of one of my tutees I teach "Barney-Style".
