My comments on tutoring Life Science : I have tutored a couple elementary students, but realize that things continue to change!

Very much based on working with what the student knows. I tend to start by having them explain to me what they are doing and what they think. I then provide some guidance and walk through a sample problem with them. I ask that they try another problem like it on their own and ask questions to prompt them as they work.
I started tutoring in high school for extra credit. I have primarily tutored in mathematics and general chemistry! I tutored a girl in Algebra 1 for a year, helped my best friend and her Mom with college mathematics, and worked through college algebra with my husband. In college I was a teachers assistant for general chemistry 1 and tutored in quantitative chemical analysis. Since then I have tutored a gentlemen for the math portion of his GED. Basically, I love the one-on-one opportunity to help people to find that "light-bulb moment" where the math and science is no ... read more

My early teaching and learning style was to do as many problems that were thrown at me in class or the text. I learned quickly that you need to understand the problem in order to solve problems that aren't set up for you. I enjoy teaching and have a lot of patience with my students becuase I believe they all have the potential to meet and exceed their expectations with the proper tutuledge.

I have always been driven to attain academic excellence. I have two degrees: an AS with high honors and a BS in Biochemistry Magna Cum Laude. As such I have taken many courses in math and science, and I am also interested in foreign languages and the social sciences. During the past 5 years, I have received level 3 tutoring certification (the highest available) from a local college where I was previously employed as a tutor. My main expertise is in math and science (especially chemistry), but I have also tutored students in psychology, English, Spanish, German, and study skills.
I love teaching and getting to know my students along the way. I have worked with many people; some young, some older, and some who spoke very little English. I have learned that everyone is capable of achieving extraordinary things, sometimes they just need to have the information presented in a simp ... read more

When teaching I try to determine the way each individual student learns best and incorporate it into my style. I utilize a lot of unique strategies such as math songs to remember mathematical principals and practices and games to engage the learner and make the learning experience memorable. When I have worked with older students this style changes a little, I maintain my excitement about the subject area, but we do a lot more practice problems. I make sure to not just explain how to solve a problem in math or what a process is in science, but I also explain why we solve the problem in this manner or why that process occurs in such a way.

I have recently graduated from the University of Delaware and intend to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry within the next few years. My major was in Chemistry with a minor in Biochemistry; I also focused on Theatre, Japanese, French, English, and Biology. Students must be challenged, not coddled. Students at all levels need to be pushed to find their limits and then move beyond them. Only then can they achieve real growth. We must use education as a tool to educate the next generation not only for employment but also for citizenship. In so doing, we need to take into account historical precedents and objective reality. Our students need more than simply reading comprehension and basic math skills. One of the chief contributions we can make to our students is teaching critical thinking. Students must be encouraged to think for themselves and not mindlessly parrot stock answers. After reasoned analysis, they must find their own truth.

As a high school student I participated in peer tutoring. While in high school I volunteered to serve as a tutor in Algebra, Geometry, Chemistry, Zoology, and Biology. I graduated with 27 AP credits which helped me complete a B.S. at Clarke College in 3 years. At Clarke I found that tutoring my peers helped both the student and me. As a biology major at Clarke College I took many courses in science including biology, chemistry, and physics. Clarke is a liberal arts college so I took a variety of courses including English and History. At Clarke I tutored peers in many classes such as Human Biology, General Chemistry, and Elementary Physics. I also revised and edited papers along with providing topics and direction to written works.
