Although my degree is in music education, most of my teaching was done in Christian schools. I have taught math (through Algebra II), English, grammar, history, and science. I would be proficient in any math through Algebra I and any English, grammar or history through grades 12. I have taught grades 3-12.
I have high expectations of students, but I adjust my "teaching style" to the student. For the struggling student, I usually begin at a level that they can easily perform. From that platform, we progress step-by-step until we find the area of difficulty and why it is there. When we master that, we move on. There are a variety of techniques to use, depending on the problem and the student, but the general expectation is that they can do it.

Teaching mainly K-8 on a consistent schedule, I have learned that some students need one-on-one teaching. Being the third teacher in Head Start, I had time to work with individual students. All children were very well prepared for kindergarten. The older children, including High School and Middle School, I would walk around the room and aide them when they were confused. I also had them read the text orally taking turns and we would do the work sheet to prepare for quiz, test or new chapter. I am very patient with those who are truly in need of assistance. I have tutored in the past in phonics for those having difficulty reading and pronouncing letters.

I have a BA in History from UM, which, of course, entailed not just learning and researching history, but also tremendous amounts of writing papers on a myriad of topics. I am currently a law student at Wayne State, and so am also well versed in legal and social issues, as well as, once again, lots of writing and grammar. A Little Bit About Me...

I would usually look the paper over and point out problems with grammar and spelling and tell the student why they weren't working. I believe in the mantra "show, don't tell" when it comes to teaching. I'm pretty laid back and willing to work at whatever pace the student is comfortable with. I don't move on until I feel both of us are on the same page. I think the history of the English language has a lot of really interesting trivia.
I tutored with the Writing Fellows every Thursday at Schoolcraft College when I was working towards my Associate's in Liberal Arts. I helped students write and edit their papers. The primary focus was English but there were a few Social Studies/History students thrown in there. My style has always been to encourage questions from the student or with the many people who have worked for me over the years to challenge the status quo. I encourage individuals to stretch the envelope and to seek different solutions rather than accept what has been done before. I have also stressed that there is never a bad question or wrong to think outside the box. For example I have always asked students, "Why study history?" What I relish now,is that many respond, "To learn how we got here."
