I attended many courses to obtain a medical transcription license and pharmaceutical technician license in California. During my early college years, I tutored music students at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, CA and math students. I made a decision to return back to college to pursue a degree. I graduated from the University of New Mexico with a BA in Music in 2007. I obtained a licensure to teach Music/K-8 in New Mexico. While attending college, I ran my own home music studio. I believe that education and learning are two of the most exciting and fulfilling elements of life and believe that helping others to learn is a way to give something back to this world. I have a Masters degree in Business. Not surprisingly, my math skills are quite good. Additionally, I possess strong communication skills (verbal and written) and am working on my first novel. In my professional life, I have managed staff and welcomed opportunities to teach and mentor. An intern from years ago recently contacted me and told me that he still fondly remembers us working on a white board to problem solve an issue. I believe that learning and problem solving should be fun, a puzzle that can be cracked if we just approach it the right way.
I love the learning process. Few things in life are as rewarding as teaching and learning. Stylistically, I would consider myself to a patient and ... read more

I strive to include various learning styles when working with children. Some students learn best by listening or writing, while others need movement or tactile experiences to help in comprehension. I believe in keeping students engaged at all times, to minimize wasted time. Every child has potential. A teacher just has to know how to reach each child, and that happens when the students builds trust with the teacher.
I have taught music in public education for the last 15 years. I have been involved in church music ministry for over 25 years, and currently am the church pianist in Stockton, Ca. I love working with children of all ages. Math is my second love and I almost majored in math instead of music. Math was always easy for me in school. Although I don't enjoy writing, I am very strong in written English and enjoy proofreading papers.

I am a parent to a four year old and a twenty year old stepson, so my teaching and parenting is one filled with patience, toughness but fairness, and lots of humor. I believe that children should talk respectfully, grammatically correct [Student: “Can I go to the bathroom?” Myself: “Well, I don’t know. Do you know how to?’ Student: “I mean, may I go to the bathroom?” Myself: “Yes, of course you may go the bathroom”], and should treat each other with respect too. It’s not easy, and it’s more of a battle some days than others. I have students who feel that they can do whatever they want to, on their own time. I teach that with the privileges comes the work, there is no easy way around it [I work with high 6th graders and 7th graders].
I have worked for over five years with elementary and middle school-aged students; I have also worked with People with Disabilities. I love working wit ... read more

I would describe my teaching style in terms of the activity, belaying. Slack is given to the rope at times so that the climber may advance, or traverse, the face of the mountain. When the climber feels tired, or incapable, the rope needs tightening so the climber stays secure. If the climber falls from the face of the mountain the taught rope will prevent injury or possible demise. I tend to give my students slack when I feel they are advancing in terms of curriculum, yet once I notice their tendency to rest, or falter, I tighten my teaching approach by using more straightforward methods so that they are not confused, or do not wear themselves out with struggle. This is all so they reach the top of whatever mountain they choose to conquer.

A Little Bit About Me...

I know of few things that compare to the moment a concept or idea clicks in a student's head. Regardless if it registers with a knowing nod or is the result of a difficult grinding process, the feeling for me is the same. I firmly believe that no two children think in exactly the same way, and so often no two children learn in exactly the same way. Differences in persepective, experience, environment, etc. mean paths to discovery may differ for each child. My job as an educator is to find that path through patience, compassion and creativity, all while creating an enjoyable learning environment.

As a young child I wanted to be a teacher but eventually went into a different field but the love of teaching never left me. Being detail oriented, I enjoy the process of explaining things methodically and creatively. I like to approach things in a constructive way and always try to view it in the child's perspective. It is important to encourage and motivate the children and make learning fun and easy for them.

I have learned to adjust my tutoring skills specifically for the student based on their learning style; allowing the student to get much more out of the experience. The fact that I've worked with various levels has allowed me to experience a good number of behaviors, attention spans, interests, drives, and has allowed me to see the difference in subjects, how they must be illustrated as well as the way students tend to respond. From this, I have been able to curtail my style in correspondence to each tutee.
Since high school I have been involved with tutoring. Although on a voluntary basis I tutored Algebra 2 and BIology in high school.
