Since 1970, I have been teaching English in grades 7-12 in both Middle and High School. My teaching has encompassed helping students become proficient in both writing and reading skills. Teaching in Denver has challenged me to work effectively with students having limited English proficiency as well as learning disabilities, but I enjoy working with all students! My strength as a teacher is in using scaffolding to help students gain confidence as a learner. What that essentially means is that I provide a great deal of support and modeling to students learning new skills and concepts. I began working with children who were diagnosed with autism my first year of college (I did this for 7 years). I felt a sense of accomplishment as I watched them grow as people. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.).
