During my undergraduate years, I started tutoring at the various tutoring centers on campus. I tutored science, mathematics, French, Spanish and Italian. That experience sparked my interest in teaching. At the end of my undergraduate studies, I applied and received the teaching opportunity program scholarship. In the last two years, I have worked as the dean of discipline in charge of maintaining a safe learning environment for over five hundred students.
All children have the ability to learn given the opportunity. I want to give them that opportunity by figuring out ways to convey my lesson to all my students. The best method I have found for relating mathematical and scientific concepts to students has been with a majority of examples. While explaining theory is necessary for a student to gain the basics of a concept it is only through working problems and exercises that a student truly understands the material. When teaching I would usually explain a section of material as best I could, then work through multiple examples that illustrate the material. This is then supplemented with exercises for the students to work through on their own.
