I am a graduate of St. John's University with a major in Spanish. Before attending college, I lived for a year in Venezuela, learning to perfect my spoken Spanish. While in college, I perfected my written Spanish through my degree and a semester living in Guatemala. I currently work as a Spanish interpreter and hold a liscense by the Minnesota State Court Interpreter Program.
I am a firm believer that if a student really wants to learn, and accepts a challenge, they can learn a language faster in a few months than most people can over the course of an entire school career. I have been a substitute teacher for over a year. I have subbed for every grade level and subject. A significant amount of my sub jobs have been math related. I am working on my Master's Degree at The College of Saint Scholastica, in Education. I also have had numerous classroom field experiences through the college, where I have been observed by other teachers and professors. During these experiences, every cooperating teacher has let me use them as a reference. A Little Bit About Me...

As an undergraduate at the University of Mississippi I was a teaching assistant for a College Skills class and also a year long tutor at Oxford High School in pre-algebra. After graduating from the University of Mississippi I lived in Seoul, South Korea and taught students ages 5-11 English as a Second Language, including math and social studies. Upon returning to the United States I began working on my master's degree in TESL and I've also had the opportunity to teach 3 credit bearing college courses from 2009 to current. My teaching style is, for the most part, non-directive. I think it is important to try to have students answer their own questions. When this does not work, I do not just tell the student what goes where or why this doesn't work, I give reasons and have them tell me these same reasons the next time we come across something that doesn't work.
At SCSU, I work as a writing consultant at the Writing Center on campus. With students, I help to make them better writers by helping answer questions, presenting questions, working through the brainstorming and paper-writing process, and helping with formatting. I worked with the Minnesota Literacy Council tutoring adult learners in basic math and reading skills. I attempted multiple approaches with each person until we found one that allowed the learner to make sense of the symbols and language. I encouraged the ability to work at the material until the learner could make it his/her own in some way. I also trained new employees each month in the use of a software program at a pharmaceutical company. Employees were required to learn the program regardless of experience and ability with computer programs.
