A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching, but I especially love one on one tutoring. Students I have tutored typically have a much better understanding of the subject they are studying. I approach tutoring as a facilitator of learning, rather than a professor of knowledge. Learning by discovery is a key aspect of my tutoring. I act as more of a guide, steering students in the right direction as they learn. This leads to much more meaningful and applicable learning.
As a recent graduate of Saint John’s University, I possess many skills that make me a great tutor candidate. I studied post secondary in high school and graduated in the top ten of my class. I was on the deans list every year of my college career. I was a teachers aid at the University of Minnesota for three years in the anatomy department. I was a the lead embalmer for the University and worked for the Anatomy bequest program. I was licensed in mortuary science in 2007 and have been working as a funeral director and Retail manager for the past three years.
I believe that the purpose of tutoring is to help students help themselves, or to assist or guide them to the point at which they become an independent learner. As an undergraduate at the University of Mississippi I was a teaching assistant for a College Skills class and also a year long tutor at Oxford High School in pre-algebra. After graduating from the University of Mississippi I lived in Seoul, South Korea and taught students ages 5-11 English as a Second Language, including math and social studies. Upon returning to the United States I began working on my master's degree in TESL and I've also had the opportunity to teach 3 credit bearing college courses from 2009 to current. I am qualified to tutor pre-calculus and science as I received an associate of science degree where I completed Calculus II, Organic Chemistry and Genetics.
