Russian for beginners from an American who lived there

In the USA, I have had 11 years of experience teaching English at the high school level and four years of experience in teaching English at the college level. I earned an M.A. in English from Marquette University. In Russia I had five years of experience in teaching college English classes and giving private English lessons to children and teenagers. After taking Russian classes at a small college, I went to Russia in 1995 and lived there until 2000, studying Russian every day with a private tutor.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned two bachelor degrees from the University of Wisconsin: a BA in History and a BA in Political Science. I thoroughly enjoy both subjects and continue to deepen my knowledge of both in ongoing private study. In the past I have tutored students in music, mathematics, and English and feel capable of tutoring in any of the social sciences.
I believe the most important key to teaching is having a passionate teacher. When a student has a teacher who is interested in the subject matter, they cannot help but be interested too. In regards to my favorite subject, history, I believe it is best taught by focusing on the ‘story’ aspect of it. I try to understand the student first. Then I try to bring him/her to discover what I am trying to teach. I am patient and respectful of their personalities. My style is participatory, democratic. Together with the students we discover the meanings of what we are learning.
I have a passion for learning and I always make sure that people around me also discover it in themselves. That is the the reason why I am constantly around learning activities. I have been a tutor many times in various settings. I am at present a Level 2 coach in Track and Field from the USATF organization. I enjoy coaching since it is closely related to teaching. English is my favorite subject. I also tutored French for 4 to 5 years.
