After college graduation, I taught Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, Earth Science, Biology and Chemistry for one year at a private school in Fresno, CA. I then moved to San Jose, CA and taught at Valley Christian High School. I taught Algebra and Algebra II for one year and then taught Biology and Honors Biology for two years. Tutoring is not just about improving grades, although that is the most obvious result. It is about allowing the student to feel the pride of success, and learn how to transfer newly learned skills in one subject to other unrelated subjects. I truly believe that every student can be successful. Sometimes the pathway to success is not always visible to the student; a competent teacher can point the way. It is extremely rewarding as an educator to open up that pathway to the student, especially so in the sciences. Teaching comes easy to me because I was taught very well. In high school I was the president of the FTA club where we would go to local elementary and middle schools to educate children of all educational capacity and mental handicaps. Patience is a valuable skill I had to develop early on, as well as many others, in working with children. My teaching method is to first take the teaching subject(s) and break them down into correlating groups. Then I would see how I would explain that to someone who knows absolutely nothing about the subject. Then explain the material in a slow and efficient manner and repeat if necessary. I have recently graduated from UNCW with a BS degree in chemistry. I have taken mainly math and science classes for the past three years. I have participated in many study groups and helped many other students who were in math and science classes by tutoring them.
I like to work through each type of problem step by step creating a blue print of what the student should be doing to solve each type of problem. I then repeat this with another problem of the same type. I like to go through every type of problem like this while they write the steps of how to do the problem down and then try to solve each problem step by step. I like to emphasize that they write neatly so they can see clearly what they are doing and what they have done so they can quickly go back through the problem and check for mistakes.
