Collaborative & Fun Teacher

I worked in the financial sector for 10 years and have a Master's Degree in Economics and Finance. Since then I have focused my efforts into freelance teaching, and have worked with students in a variety of subjects: chess, math, finance, language arts, history, piano, and writing, among others. Other subjects I’ve studied informally: literature, language, history, politics & government.
I believe that each student has a unique learning style of that must be discovered in real-time. Therefore I tailor the lessons towards an open, organic, collaborative process. I focus on small incremental steps designed to build momentum and flow states, which is the best way to start anything. The goal of any lesson is to bring the student to a place where they can learn on their own. The purpose of learning is fun!

My comments on tutoring Journalism : I was on the journalism team all four years of high school, serving as managaing editor, and sports editor, and was the only writer ot be granted free-lance editorial writing. Furthermore, during college and since I've taken my knowledge of pharmacoogy, biochemisry, chemistry, anatomy, etc. and have written several referenced articels for the online health magainze www.mindandmuscle.net under my name Tom Rayhawk

Learning can be hard. Memorization can be hard. Knowing how to determine the proper equation to use in a chemistry or math equation can be hard. What I focus on with my students is not simply telling them the information and how they should go about finding the right answer but, more importantly, why the answer they are choosing is correct. What that does is to force them to learn the actual skill and when to use a given equation or what a sign or symbol indicates in terms of the type of problem they are trying to solve. By doing this, I find, the student is able to get to the core of not simply stuffing equations, grammar terms, or scientific terminology in their heads and then unloading them on the test. Rather - and this is my main objective with each student - they understand why their answer is right. They LEARN. An easy way to test this is when quizzing them and browsing thei ... read more

Tutoring without Tears.

Students learn best when they feel safe to explore and learn from past mistakes. In fact, 'mistakes' should be viewed as opportunities to improve skills and learning strategies. I use 'play therapy' most often to teach skills and strategies. Multiple studies have demonstrated that children learn best through play.
I have 30+ years of experience helping students with a variety of disabilities which include language disorders. My experience encompasses Early Childhood Special Education, Elementary, Middle, High School, and post-secondary. I have helped students with ADD/ADHD, Autism/Aspergers/PDD-NOS, learning disabilities, multiple disabilities, medically fragile, language impaired and ESL (English as a Second Language).

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all children want and try to do their best, but sometimes need an extra push. I think it is necessary to use the appropriate curriculum, but to find out what teaching method works best for each student as we all learn differently. It is also important for each child/student to have some flexibility in what they learn in order to express their individuality and own creativity.
I have been caring for children of all ages for the last 9 years, which includes tutoring and metoring. I am also in my second year as a substitute teacher, in which I teach grades pre-k through 12th grade.

A Little Bit About Me...

I know exactly what teachers and administrators are looking for in “good writing,” but this isn’t something that I was born with or that came naturally—it is a learned skill that my own teachers have cultivated by building upon the skills I brought to the classroom. As such, the most influential facet of my own teaching philosophy is my commitment to respecting student intelligences. If my students are not confident in the abilities they bring with them to the tutoring session, then the likelihood of facilitating sustainable improvement in the student drops dramatically. In light of this, my tutoring style foregrounds the importance of first reinforcing the knowledge my students already have and then building off of this knowledge.

I am passionate about literature, writing, and proper grammar, but I also have a strong grounding in pop culture, which helps, I think, to make the subject matter relevant and engaging. I am patient and skilled at explaining difficult subjects in a way that I feel a student can understand and I believe that humor is a very important tool in making learning an enjoyable experience. Some of my favorite and most effective teachers were among the funniest people I know and that serves as an inspiration for my own teaching style.
I graduated from Columbia University with a BA in English and political science and spent the four years following graduation working on the communications team for Mayor Michael Bloomberg in New York City. In that capacity I supervised a staff of five full time employees and a variable number of interns. That experience was helpful in terms of learning to teac ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a recent college graduate with a BA in English (emphasis in Creative Writing). I have learned extensive grammatical skills and understanding through my work as an undergraduate as well as through my role as Non Fiction editor of our University's undergraduate literary magazine. I have experience tutoring non-native English speakers in English and have previously volunteered at day care centers, reading to children ages 2-5. I am excited to be given the opportunity to tutor again!
I love to work with and help children of all ages with their language skills and understanding. I like to teach through example and help children figure out their problems on their own, but with some guidance.
