Dyslexia is one of my top subjects!

I am a special education teacher with over 10 years experience. I have taught special education up to middle school and general education elementay. I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Masters in Special Education. I am also a classroom educator level Orton-Gilliangham trainee (I have the certificate to prove it). I also have a daughter that is dyslexic and ADHD.
I use multi-sensory teaching strategies to help students with disabilities. I also use the students learning style to cater my time to their needs and learning modality.

I began 'teaching' as the head wakeboarding instructor at Coble Ski School in Lillington, NC, when I was a junior in high school. Shortly thereafter I took a position working at a beach resort in Pensacola, FL, where I spent an entire summer instructing surfing, kayaking and sailing. At Duke I tutored during each of my four years, either biweekly at a local Durham elementary school or at the Emily K Family Life Center. Since I am an engineering student, I have always been interested and excelled in math and science, so I have tutored many kids in all areas of science and mathematics. I have also tutored in Spanish and French. Last year, I worked with a young man who had dyslexia. I have helped kids of all ages, whether at the elementary, high school, or collegiate level.
I am a very patient person, a trait which I believe is very beneficial for a tutor to possess. I am always patient when teaching, and in doing so have succeeded in getting my point across. I like to pass on small tricks and acronyms that I have came up with for many things, some of which I have still retained to this day for my own personal use, not just for school work.

Although I started my association with education as a teacher assistant for special education, I quickly grew to love the field and pursued my licensure in special education. I have worked as a teacher for learners with autism within the self-contained setting and I currently provide special education services for students in a resource setting.
While the majority of my instruction is direct and explicit, I find that many times, my students thrive on working problems out by indirect questioning. They find themselves empowered and feel a part of their own education when they are led to the correct response.
