Since I have tutored for several years, I've found that every person learns slightly differently. The key to how I teach is to figure out how that person best learns. There is no such thing as a stupid person, just one who hasn't been taught in a way that they can understand yet. My teaching style varies depending on the student I am working with. I try to build new skills using prior knowledge and interests. There are several different ways to explain an idea. The trick is finding the right one that the student will understand. Sometimes it takes a few tries before the student "gets it." I never give up on a student.
