I believe that instilling the confidence to learn is the key to effective instruction. Students need confidence not only in their instructor’s mastery of the subject matter, but also in their own ability to gain their own such master. This is not to suggest that rigor should not be applied, but rather that a student must have an emotional engagement with the learning process and a sense of their own progress, however minimal it might seem at a particular time. Frustration is the primary obstacle to successful learning and overcoming it is the instructor’s chief task.

My goals is to get the student up to speed so they can succeed on their own. In mathematics, problems can be solved several different ways, so I adapt the method I teach to what is most natural to the student. I believe everyone has mathematical ability, but not everyone approaches problems the same way. If the student has problems in school, it's not because they're incapable.
