A Little Bit About Me...

I began teaching when I was homeschooling my own children. They joined a weekly co-op and I was asked to teach high school level writing, public speaking and music appreciation for co-op students(not all at the same time). I discovered that students who took my classes were later commended by professors in college for their writing and speaking skills. I began substitute teaching in 2001, and eventually obtained my master's degree in secondary education. I have continued to work in the public schools as a substitute teacher. Because I am a writer, myself, I have spent a great deal of time learning how to communicate principles of grammar, organization of materials and writing style.

I have worked with students of almost every age and level. My first teaching degree was a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education. With that degree, I worked in a preschool, and I have substituted extensively in elementary schools and in middle and high schools for 12 years, learning to work with math systems such as Investigations and Expressions. At the same time I have aided and taught evening classes for adults learning basic skills to further their educational and career goals, and I have volunteered to teach Sunday school and ESL. I have worked with at-risk children in the Chicago Public Schools system to teach a wide range of skills, primarily focusing on college readiness skills, essay and resume writing, ACT preparation, and remedial and advanced reading techniques. I am also highly qualified to teach speech and journalism, and have a year of experience in each as well. I tutored for the Federal Way, WA campus of DeVry University from spring of 2007 to fall of 2008. I tutored students in English, multiple maths, programming, game design, logic, and test prep. I stopped tutoring to devote my time to the final project of my degree. Now I'm an independent video game developer tutoring to make "ends meet" while I'm working on my first commercial game project.
