Poetry is one of my top subjects! My poetry has been published in writing journals and quarterlies. I also have extensive experience working with college level students on their poetry.

I began teaching at eighteen. I’d just graduated high school and wasn’t ready for college, so I worked as a personal trainer at a gym within jogging distance of my house. I worked with clients one-on-one helping structure their workouts to their needs, and while I may be stretching it to equate teaching with providing pointers on proper form or advising on ways to augment a stagnant routine, but I think that gap year spent in the gym was when my proclivity for teaching first became incipient. I spent several years in Omaha teaching creative writing at the High School and College level, giving classes at Creighton University, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and Metro Tech. The program was called Writing Floes. The basic idea is that our ideas are frozen in the oceans of our unconscious minds. Music melts the ice. The goal is to get both hemispheres of the brain in the room at the same time.

Poetry is one of my top subjects!

I have over 19 years experiences teaching in Drexel University's First Year Writing Program. My experience includes teaching online, face-to-face, and hybrid classes ( partially face-to-face and partially online). For the past 5 years I have also taught ESL sections of First Year Writing. In addition I ma a tutor for the University Writing Center, a position I've also held for 10 years.
My teaching philosophy is simple, help students write to the best of their ability, give them the tools to engage in critical thinking, and challenge them to write about what they are interested in. Writing is clearly a skill that crosses majors, and is a critical skill in the workplace. I pride myself in being able to get students to see that writing is not only a practical skill, but also a lifelong skill.
