My comments on tutoring Poetry : Poetry is all part of learning the ground rules of Literature. Its is always included in my studies, such as Edgar Allen Poe and Annabelle Lee and other classic stories.

As a parent, I was able to finish my degree in 2003 and return back to college as an adult student. Being a parent as well as a teacher for five years, I saw that the experience of parenting firsthand before actually teaching in the classroom was very beneficial. I love the youth and the teens, and was hired as a Language Arts teacher for a junior high private school for the last five years. I taught English, writing skills, religion, and Literature. Because I was recently a graduate in 2003, I knew that the students needed to learn writing skills and therefore prepared them for for high school writing. I believe in teaching the whole student. I wanted to make a difference in a teens life. I have learned so much from teaching.

I believe that applications to everyday life should be stressed if a tutor/teacher is to pique the interest of their student(s). Rather than stressing rote memorization, I believe it is more important to relate overall concepts in a "partnering" style. It is important to remember that one of the cornerstones of teaching is making the subject matter interesting and relevant to the student's experiences. I believe it is also important to focus on a student's strengths rather than their weaknesses. As in many areas of life, teaching also requires patience. From my experience, children benefit greatly from an easy-going approach where they are regarded as equals and treated with the utmost respect and dignity.

A Little Bit About Me...

If I could choose one word to represent the way in which I do things it would have to be integrity. I choose this word because it implies a transition from knowing to acting in accordance with one's sense of self as a whole. By bridging the gap between tutor to student I participate in an act of truthfulness which is mutually beneficial. I encourage intelligence, creativity, and development in myself and those around me. A Little Bit About Me...

From my tutoring experiences last year, my teaching style would best be described as very proactive. Many of the students were extremely frustrated by the concepts that they did not understand. This created an apathetic attitude towards the subject. Due to the lack of interest that I observed, I decided to go through problem by problem with the students. I talked them through each problem, and asked the students questions, but required them to calculate the answer. As we practiced and practiced, the students began to use the techniques that I taught them to calculate the answers on their own.
I am a second year UW Madison student pursuing a math degree. I have completed Calculus 1, Calculus 222, Calculus 234, Calculus 3 based engineering statistics, and Actuarial Science (a class designed to prepare actuarial students for the P exam).
