I have worked with students of all ages. I have taught elementary all the way to college level students. I have taught basic math, algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus and SAT math. I graduated from electrical engineering school. I understand what it takes to bring students up to speed. Over the years I have learned that students did not understand the subject because they did not master the basics. Math is like solving the puzzle, one has to master the previous course before moving on to the next.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked with children of all ages in different environments and capacities for the past 20 years. It all started at the YMCA Afterschool and Summer Programs which gave me my first satisfactory feeling for being around young people. That led to substitute teaching and to 6 years in the classroom with 6th graders. For 1 year I taught English as a Foreign Language in Slovenia and Germany. Finally, I yearned for more one on one experience which resulted in being a Independent Study teacher for the past 5 years. I believe my variety of experiences as an educator has prepared me well to help a wide range of students.
With my background and degree being in music, I have enjoyed finding creative ways to induce wonder and enthusiasm for learning in my students. I have always accomplished this with the utmost patience, consideration and respect. This last quality in my style (respect o ... read more

Statement of Teaching Style I feel that all learners should have access to the highest quality education possible. The object of education is to provide each student with the tools that will help them develop their individual talents. All students should be given an opportunity in a safe educational setting to demonstrate their talents. This opportunity also means giving every student a chance to show their full potential. Instructors must have a pleasant and enthusiastic attitude. Instructors must be accepting of all students regardless of ethnic background or other personal factors. An instructor should use a variety of instructional methods and delivery techniques to facilitate the learning process.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a college graduate with both a bachelor's and master's degree, I have always been seeking excellence in learning. I have, over the years written many papers, reports, and essays, and consequently have learned and used many writing skills in many contexts. I have written academic papers, mental health reports, and sermons. For the past 20+ years in my work as a pastor and mental health rehab specialist I have worked directly with youth and children in a teaching role, healping them to learn about themselves and to express it verbally and in writing.
I enjoy teaching and see it as one of my gifts. In all of my jobs I've seen it as my goal to help others learn and grow. I believe that everyone is a natural learner, everyone is curious. Each of us has a different learning style and I am sensitive to that in each person that I teach. I am a naturally calm and friendly person a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

For the past 10 years, I have worked in my community, helping to better the lives of children. At age 15, I began mentoring young girls and volunteering for a non-profit organization, counseling developmentally delayed children and at-risk youth. I later went on to become a Behavioral Therapist, educating children with autism. My love for children (and passion for education) was the determining factor in the course of my college career. I attained a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Utah in 2008 (graduating with a cumulative GPA of 3.8). In addition to my Psychology degree, I also hold a certificate in Human Factors Engineering and recently published research in this field.

My style of teaching starts with observations, questions and then active listening. With a valid agenda and skills assessment I can put an effective learning plan into place. I have a great deal of patience and continually seek to hone my teaching skills and be an inspirational mentor.

My first visit is just an assessment of where the student began to get lost regardless of the age or level. More often that not, they have to memorize their fractions to decimal to percentage conversion from 1/2 to 1/12. Given this underlying knowledge allows me to focus on the subject at hand. I usually recommend purchasing a Spark Notes or something similar for the subject as a reference guide. I use examples from the book to review, and assist in homework. I do not do the homework for them, however, do ask how they will approach it before diving in. I add tips and tricks and different ways to approaching the problem. I also assist in anxiety control, study and organization habits.

As Cal Poly SLO has one of the most competitive engineering programs on the west coast, I have a depth of knowledge in both math and sciences. After earning my B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, I lived in Germany, Ohio, and Central California while trying to figure out my place in this world. I settled for two years in Salinas, California where I taught pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry to junior high and high school students. I believe this level of math is the most important as applications to everyday life are abundant.
As the school I taught at was private, the students were very competitive. I found my lectures and class activities reached 90% of the students. The remaining 10% were the students I especially loved to instruct. These students had difficulty learning the subject in a traditional fashion, so I was forced to explain the subject from a different angle. The in ... read more

Children are amazing! I have been around children of all ages for most of my life due to a large family. Every child has an opportunity to be the next Albert Einstein however I feel that it is the lack of understanding on the teachers behalf on how to teach to the different needs of the children that keeps the children from learning all that they could. Every person learns differently and I feel that I have the ability to help the children learn at their own pace and relate the material to them so they can better understand. Though some children can be difficult to teach I feel that I am very patient and endearing and have the ability to work with all different types of children to help them succeed and increase their knowledge.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style would be that of Guided Discovery. This is a highly interactive style which leads the student to uncover the answer themselves as opposed to the teacher simply reciting the answer to them. Guided Discovery requires the student to learn by doing therefore developing necessary problem solving and deductive skills that will make them better learners and thinkers both now and in the future. I implement this style by asking leading questions, giving examples, making analagies and asking the student what they think or ask them to explain how they came upon a certain conclusion. This ensures that the desired cognitive skills and strategies are being learned.
