Learning needs to have importance to a student. They need to understand why they need to learn the things they are being taught. Then it makes more sense to them. If possible, teach to their strengths. If they like computers, find a website that gives them practice. If they are better writers than listeners, have them dictate and read it back to you. Flashcards work well for some while others have difficulty remembering things. It all depends on the strengths of that child as to what is the best way to teach.

I am a very patient, soft spoken person who understands what it is like to struggle. I also had difficulty learning in school and wish someone would have taken the time to notice I wasn't being 'lazy' but really had a hard time comprehending and remembering what I read. Study habits need to be taught. Learning can be an adventure when you are feeling successful but when you are meeting failure, it is difficult. I feel all children have the capacity to learn but it is up to us as educators to find how to help that child learn.
