I am patient and approachable but insist on the value of completing assignments even if the student "hates" them. I am good at explaining how this will be important later, which turns around reluctant learners. I believe in explaining, showing, modelling, and then stepping back while the student tries, explains, and determines where the mistakes come up. I value resiliance, and bask in the joy of competence achieved through effort.
I went from the Boston Public Schools to Commonwealth School and then Wellesley College, and would have been lost, early on, without help from tutors. I majored in English and Russian and work with several communities for whom English is not their first language.
