Because English and literature is subjective, I use a nondirective approach to ensure that the student is exercising their creative problem solving skills and critical thinking skills. Basically, I ask them about their interpretation of the text or their own writing. With grammar, I typically model the correct use for the student two or three times, and then have them finish finding patterns and correcting mistakes themselves.
I've taken courses in tutoring, grammar, Shakespeare, and writing composition, as well as worked in the University Writing Center at my university as a writing consultant. I currently tutor three Middle Eastern students in writing composition, conventions of English grammar, and health. I do freelance proofreading and editing.

My approach is fairly structured, with heavy emphasis on the "nuts and bolts" of content and on moving smoothly and logically from one step to the next. However, I also like to balance this with use of stories, field trips, and conversations so that my lessons have a well-rounded and user-friendly feel.

After receiving my BA in English Literature I began to pursue a teaching certificate at Portland State University. I completed all the prerequisites and passed the Oregon Educators Exam to be admitted into the program. Though I did not complete the teaching program, I gained much experience working one on one with elementary age children.
