My comments on tutoring Physics : Both calculus-based and algebra-based physics.

When I was studying engineering at University of Michigan, I took a job as a tutor at Washtenaw Community College. This was the most rewarding job I ever had. Since about the year 2000, I have been working as a freelance tutor in the subjects of math, chemistry and physics. I also tutor students in engineering courses. I generally work with college students or upper-class high school students. Normally I work in the Brighton/Howell Michigan area. I meet most students at a public library or coffee shop. My average rate is $50 per hour. This can be negotiated, however. I like to take the students ability to pay into consideration and will charge less per hour if advanced payment can be arranged.
I like to work one on one with students in a neutral location. Small groups are not out of the question however.

My teaching style could be labeled as Socratic in that I prefer to lead the student to discovering the answers to their own inquiries through a series of guided and redirected questions. Through my prior experience, I have observed that students tend to become overwhelmed by the subject material. By asking the student simple questions that require basic conceptual understanding, the student is able to build confidence and perspective as he draws nearer to a solution. I was a teaching assistant during my graduate school, from 1975 to 1980. I was assisting in College level Mathematics courses, including Algebra, Calculus, CAE applications. The only other experience I had was in assisting my kids during their high school studies and did not do a bad job. One of them is a Hardare Test and Validation Engineer at Intel, Portland, Oregon and the other one is doing Medicine at U. Of M.
