I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.

A Little Bit About Me...

Although I have a BS in Elementary Education, my experience ranges from preschool to high school. I have over two years’ experience teaching preschoolers basic reading and math skills. I have seven years’ experience teaching elementary school, where I have taught many children the fundamentals of reading, writing, and arithmetic. While teaching, I tutored several students that needed help with reading, each session ending with tremendous results. In my three years of teaching middle school and high school, I taught math and history. In addition, I taught my students how to write research papers. Not only have I taught academic classes, but I have also taught sign language to all age groups.
