I am particularly adept at explaining mathematical concepts and techniques to students.
I find a way to build on what the student already knows. I find a way to explain a technique based on what the student already knows how to do.
If a student does not know how to solve a problem, then I will show the student how I solve the problem, explaining my thinking and results as I go along. Then, I give the student a blank sheet of paper and they have to do the problem all by themselves. I may also change the problem a little and have them do it again to practice the technique. As a recent CSU-Pueblo graduate with a mathematics major and a double minor in both physics and economics, I feel I have plenty of education for this position. While never having been paid by an actual tutoring service, I have helped friends and other students through challenging courses ranging from algebra to calculus and even statistics for a very reasonable fee. I’ve never bought into the argument that some kids just can’t do math. There is plenty of truth that some learn math much quicker and easier than others, but with a good work ethic and plenty of encouragement all kids are capable of learning these sciences. I feel the most important thing to do as a teacher is to stay positive, and try to somehow relate the math problems to real life situations. When correcting a student, it’s vital to carefully choose your words, for a harsh response will demoralize the student’s spirit
