Social Skills Support!!!

I have been teaching children on the autism spectrum in the Leander Independent School District for the last 5 years. I have taught students of varying needs on the autism spectrum ranging from social needs to severe behavior and academic support. As a recent graduate of the University of Texas Autism and Developmental Disabilities masters program I am very up to date with current research-based interventions for students with autism. In particular I am experienced in Applied Behavior Analysis, as I am currently working towards my Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification.

My comments on tutoring Special Education : I have taught many different special needs classes in the public schools such as ADD/ADHD and high functioning Autism, high functioning retardation and behavioral problem students. Each student needs a different approach to learning. None can be lumped into one classroom and must have individual attention. My teaching methods recognize the whatever each individual student needs to be able to focus and learn to study the best.I approach each student as if they were not a special education student, but merely a student who needs a bit of extra attention. They get rewards like stickers for good achievements. I encourage parents to be involved in their child's on going education as much as possible with weekly assignments the student must follow through on to receive the stickers, but the parents absolutely MUST be involved to help with these assignments. i always give the parents a daily assessment of how the student is doing.

Creative teaching for a life time love of learning. I gather everything at my disposal to work with my students and teach to their particular style of learning. I have used basketball to teach social studies. Vegetables to teach science. Peanuts cereal and even M & M's to teach math. A lecture is not always the best method of teaching, but that is what they get in the classroom. A tutor has more flexibility.
3 years experience as an educator in the Copperas Cove Independent School District. 2 years experience working independently as a tutor in all core courses with grades pre-K through 6th grade. I have taught all ranges of students, including special education students with ADHD and both high functioning autism and retardation. In the public school setting the special education classes were all taught together as one. However I have tutored them on a one on one basis more eff ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Each child is different and has their own unique set of skills that they bring to the table. You have to find what that child's strength is - and use it to help that child grow in other areas. Each child must be approached as an individual, and there is not a ready-set plan that works for everyone. Find what motivates a child, what makes them tick, establish rapport with them - and then guide them along the way while providing them with multiple opportunities to experience success.
I have seven years of experience teaching general education in elementary schools, with one year of experience in 4th grade, two years in 3rd grade, and four years in 2nd grade. I have worked with children with special needs including autism, ADD/ADHD, and dyslexia. I recently completed my Masters in Special Education with an emphasis in Autism Intervention, along with a Behavior Analysis certificat ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I adhere to Gardener's Multiple Intelligences, which states that each student possesses certain intelligences and that using a students' strengths improves their achievement. Each student has individual needs, that when nurtured, will allow the student to realize his potential. Students learn differently in different environments, and as an educator, I believe a student learns best when in a comfortable environment, especially with new or challenging material. Most importantly, it is my goal to help students become individual learners and thinkers, to teach them not only content but how to help themselves as well. As a teacher, I had high expectations for all my students, and they reached them when we set manageable goals.
As a graduate of Southwestern University with a Bachelor in English and Communications, I was drawn to the field of education. I come from a family of teachers ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated in 2004 from the University of Oklahoma with my Bachelors in Business Administration. I regularly helped my fellow students survive the academic rigors of Business School. In 2009 I graduated from Texas Christian University with my Masters of Divinity. This degree was heavy in reading and writing. I have also worked for the last six years with teenagers, and as a result I have a great passion for working with them. Because of my experience, education, and background I can effectively tutor students in English, History, Business, Management, Religious classes, and Leadership classes. I would be honored to work with your student.
I believe in helping the students discover their own answers. Through patient discussion and problem solving the students will better understand the subject matter. It is important to take the time and listen to their problems so as to be ... read more
